Aesculus Chinensis is a deciduous tree of the genus Aesculus in the Aesculus family. Horse chestnuts are widely distributed and grow in the eastern and southern parts of Gansu, central and southern Shaanxi, southwestern Shanxi, southern Henan, southern Hebei, Beijing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and other vast areas. Aesculus chinensis Bge. var. Chekiangensis (Hu et Fang) and Aesculus wilsonii Rehd both of the same genus, are similar in composition and function. They both can also be used in cosmetics field.
The main active ingredient in horse chestnut seeds is aescin. Also called aescin, aescin mainly includes 4 components, namely components A, B, C, and D. A and B are β-aescin, and C and D are α-escin. They all have a common triterpene sapogenin core, and their activities are also different due to their different side chains. Therefore, the quality of aescin drugs is closely related to the ratio of the four saponins they contain. Horse chestnut leaves also contain antioxidant active ingredients, mainly phenols and tannins, flavonoids, organic acids, phytosterols and terpenes.
